This ‘Hunting’ kilt belongs to Mairi MacPherson. It was made in Scotland by the Highland House of Lawrie and it is made from wool. The wool is very soft. Lawrie’s was established in Edinburgh 1881 and was still trading as ‘Highland House of Lawrie’ in Glasgow in the 1990s.
This kilt was a lucky internet find – it was on offer for £19! It was a 26 inch waist and I have let it out to fit a 32″ waist instead. When I took out the waistband I found that the pleats had been cut, which makes letting it out rather tricky. I let out the two facing pleats and one structural pleat, and I ended up patching the resulting hole with contrasting fabric. This is hidden under the apron and can’t be seen when the kilt is worn. The waistband isn’t quite long enough any more and I thought about patching it with a different fabric, but decided against it in the end – the kilt is stable enough to wear and that’s enough.
